StackGrep Engine vs Meilisearch

Meilisearch is an open-source, typo-tolerant search engine for search-as-you-type, self-hosted or on Meilisearch Cloud. Regex queries aren't supported (people ask for them in its GitHub issues). StackGrep Engine is something else: exact text and regex search over your own documents, built for AI agents, with every match counted and your index kept in object storage.

What StackGrep does differently

  • Regex search over whole documents, which Meilisearch doesn't support
  • Exact matching over long documents, not typo-tolerant ranking
  • Exact counts of every match
  • Bucket sync from S3 and a hosted MCP server
  • Storage-priced: idle collections cost storage only

When Meilisearch is the better pick

If you're building a search bar for people, want typo tolerance and relevance tuning, and prefer software you can self-host.

Questions

Can I use both?

Yes. Many teams use a typo-tolerant engine for their users and StackGrep for their agents and internal tools.

Does StackGrep support facets?

It filters by metadata (customer:globex type:invoice) and counts matches exactly; it doesn't compute facet distributions.
